The Freeland Orchestra with West Oxfordshire Winds and West Oxfordshire Clarinets,
conducted by Wendy Marks, gave a well rehearsed and most enjoyable concert in Eynsham
Church on 27th June, with a large and appreciative audience. The Orchestra opened
proceedings with a lively account of Schubert's 2nd Symphony, producing a light touch,
well suited to this early work. The woodwind chords in the opening Largo sounded
particularly good, and the subtle key-changes in the final movement were well negotiated.
Ian Locke was the accomplished oboe soloist in Godard's Legende Pastorale, cleverly
orchestrated by Wendy Marks.
Dvorak's attractive American Suite could perhaps have used more body in the strings, not
easy with a small number. The lovely 2nd movement was sensitively played.
