July 1st 2011

“Freeland Orchestra and WOW (West Oxfordshire Winds) gave their summer concert in the brand new Madley Park Hall, whilst their own is currently being rebuilt. They played to a full audience who obviously vastly enjoyed the varied range of music heard, from full band and orchestral pieces to two solos from members.

The 29-piece orchestra worked its way very convincingly through six pieces of varying styles, ranging from 18th century Haydn, through Romantic period Tchaikovsy to later Delius. All were stylistically played. Strong solos within the pieces came from Alan Thornton and Tom Hadland on oboes, and Fiona McGrady on horn.

The orchestra leader, Tim Bruce, gave a sensitive solo performance of Joplin's Magnetic Rag, with some finely balanced accompaniment from the orchestra.

These groups showed an impressive array of local ability, with the potential for future excellent music making. You really should join them for their next concert in Freeland's newly built hall on December 2nd.”    (Doug Lamb)
