December 2nd 2011

“On Friday 2nd December the members of Freeland Orchestra, under the baton of Wendy Marks, were poised to perform their first concert in the newly constructed Freeland Hall, in front of a packed audience. Fireworks of the Handel variety erupted at the drop of the baton and it soon became evident that the sound produced was very pleasing to the ear. The second item was Moment Musical by Schubert which featured the clarinet section, whilst the next item, from Carmen by Bizet, featured the bassoons. The first half of the concert was brought to completion with the playing of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and the Grand March from Tannhäuser by Wagner.

After the interval it was the turn of the West Oxfordshire Winds to "wow" us with their power and enthusiasm! Wendy guided the players, ranging in age from 10 to late seventies, through this half of the concert with a lighter selection of music including Ain't Misbehavin' and Mission Impossible. By way of contrast, three clarinettists produced a soothing rendition of a Bach Minuet and "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue". WOW completed their programme with "Rock around the Clock" so all the audience left the hall singing or dancing! Amidst warranted tumultuous applause, the conductor was presented with a deserved bouquet, thus concluding a very enjoyable evening.”
